1 4 RELATING TO THE DESIGNATION OF A JUNETEENTH NATIONAL
1 5 FREEDOM DAY.

1 7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 9 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 1C.12 JUNETEENTH NATIONAL
1 10 FREEDOM DAY.
1 11 The governor of this state is hereby authorized and
1 12 requested to issue annually a proclamation designating the
1 13 third Saturday in June as Juneteenth National Freedom Day and
1 14 to encourage all governmental entities, civic organizations,
1 15 schools, and institutions of higher education in the state to
1 16 observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the meaning and
1 17 importance of the emancipation proclamation that ended slavery
1 18 in the United States and to recognize and celebrate the
1 19 importance of this day to every person who cherishes liberty
1 20 and equality for all people.
