PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 1C.12 JUNETEENTH NATIONAL 1 2 FREEDOM DAY. 1 3 The governor of this state is hereby authorized and 1 4 requested to issue annually a proclamation designating the 1 5 third Saturday in June as "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" 1 6 and to encourage all governmental bodies in the state to 1 7 observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the meaning and 1 8 importance of the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended 1 9 slavery in the United States, and to recognize that the oldest 1 10 known celebration of the end of slavery occurred on or about 1 11 that date. 1 12 EXPLANATION 1 13 This bill authorizes and requests the governor to issue 1 14 annually a proclamation designating the third Saturday in June 1 15 as "Juneteenth National Freedom Day".
