  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                       BY  JENSEN
  1  3 A Concurrent Resolution urging the Governor to appoint
  1  4    a commission to develop design proposals for Iowa's
  1  5    participation in the United States Mint's 50 State
  1  6    Quarters Program, and to direct the commission to
  1  7    develop designs incorporating the Iowa State Capitol
  1  8    as a symbol for the state of Iowa.
  1  9    WHEREAS, the United States Mint has implemented a
  1 10 program in accordance with Public Law No. 105-124, to
  1 11 commemorate each of the 50 states in the order in
  1 12 which the states ratified the United States
  1 13 Constitution and joined the Union; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, each state has an opportunity to develop
  1 15 and submit designs representative of the state; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, quarter dollar coins have a commercial
  1 17 lifespan of at least 30 years and are collected for
  1 18 generations, providing an opportunity for wide
  1 19 distribution of an enduring symbol of this state; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Iowa entered the Union as the twenty-ninth
  1 21 state on December 28, 1846, and the quarter dollar
  1 22 honoring the state of Iowa will be issued in 2004; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the Governor of Iowa will be contacted no
  1 24 later than 2002 concerning Iowa's design submission;
  1 25 and
  1 26    WHEREAS, a special commission should be established
  1 27 by the Governor to consider Iowa's design submission;
  1 28 and
  1 29    WHEREAS, the symbol should be unique and identified
  1 30 with Iowa; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, the one symbol that superbly represents
  2  2 the state is the Iowa State Capitol; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, the structure of the Iowa State Capitol
  2  4 represents one of the nation's finest examples of 19th
  2  5 century architecture; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, The Iowa State Capitol's magnificent
  2  7 golden dome and four smaller domes create an
  2  8 impressive Iowa landmark; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Capitol signifies the
  2 10 spirit of Iowa and symbolizes representative
  2 11 government; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 12    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2 13 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2 14 urges Governor Vilsack to appoint a special commission
  2 15 charged with developing a design incorporating the
  2 16 Iowa State Capitol as the symbol for Iowa's state
  2 17 quarter.
