1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY IVERSON, KRAMER, GRONSTAL, and JENSEN
1 3 (COMPANION TO LSB 1871HH BY SIEGRIST)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution marking the completion of the
1 5 exterior restoration of the Iowa State Capitol and
1 6 honoring the contractors, subcontractors, artisans,
1 7 skilled workers, and state employees who contributed
1 8 to the effort to complete the restoration.
1 9 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Capitol has long been a
1 10 source of pride for the citizens of Iowa since its
1 11 dedication in 1884; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the beautifully ornate Iowa State Capitol
1 13 is a shining landmark for all of Iowa and is listed in
1 14 the National Register of Historic Places; and
1 15 WHEREAS, when the exterior of this magnificent
1 16 building began to crumble, citizens of the state
1 17 demanded that the Capitol be restored to its original
1 18 beauty and grace; and
1 19 WHEREAS, pursuant to an appropriation made by the
1 20 Iowa General Assembly in 1983, the Department of
1 21 General Services commenced the exterior restoration of
1 22 the Iowa State Capitol; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the exterior restoration of the Iowa State
1 24 Capitol included replacement of the eroding sandstone,
1 25 repair of the small copper-covered domes at each
1 26 corner of the building, repair and replacement of
1 27 wooden window sashes, and regilding of the magnificent
1 28 dome with gold leaf; and
1 29 WHEREAS, the following contractors and
1 30 subcontractors, and persons employed thereby,
2 1 dedicated much time and effort toward restoring the
2 2 exterior of the Capitol: Baker Electric Inc.; Bybee
2 3 Stone; Color Inc.; Conrad Schmidt Studios Inc.;
2 4 EverGreene Painting Studios Inc.; Forman Ford Glass
2 5 Co.; Forrest & Associates Inc.; Gardner Sandblasting &
2 6 Painting Inc.; Iowa Scaffold Co. Inc.; Johnson Machine
2 7 Works Inc.; Ken Kenoyer Caulking Co.; Neumann Brothers
2 8 Inc.; Proctor Mechanical Corp.; Seedorff Masonry Inc.;
2 9 Sheet Metal Workers; Taylor Ball; Two Rivers Glass and
2 10 Door Inc.; Weatherguard Service Inc.; Wood Roofing
2 11 Co.; and Woodcraft Architectural Millwork; and
2 12 WHEREAS, several hundred artisans and skilled
2 13 workers considered their roles in the Capitol
2 14 restoration as the crowning achievement of their
2 15 careers and devoted many years of their lives to
2 16 returning the magnificent State Capitol to its
2 17 original glory; and
2 18 WHEREAS, the safety of the artisans and workers was
2 19 always important to the State of Iowa and to the
2 20 contractors and subcontractors and the importance of
2 21 using safe procedures meant that during the period
2 22 between 1983 and 2001, no serious injuries were
2 23 reported; and
2 24 WHEREAS, many state employees in the legislative
2 25 and executive branches proudly devoted significant
2 26 time and effort to completing the exterior restoration
2 27 of the building; and
2 28 WHEREAS, the exterior restoration of the Iowa State
2 29 Capitol will be completed in 2001; NOW THEREFORE,
2 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
3 1 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
3 2 Assembly proudly marks the celebrated completion of
3 3 the exterior restoration of the Iowa State Capitol in
3 4 2001 and honors all persons who contributed their time
3 5 and effort to the successful restoration of the
3 6 building's exterior; and
3 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
3 8 Resolution be made available to the artisans and
3 9 skilled workers who labored to restore the exterior of
3 10 the Iowa State Capitol.
