PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY JOHNSON, LUNDBY, REHBERG, HAMMOND, FREEMAN, 1 3 SOUKUP, HARPER, GREINER, BOETTGER, TINSMAN, and KRAMER 1 4 (COMPANION TO LSB 3577HH BY TYMESON) 1 5 A Concurrent Resolution encouraging state and local 1 6 governments, business interests, health care 1 7 professionals, and individuals with an interest in 1 8 good health to help educate the public regarding 1 9 osteoporosis prevention, detection, and treatment, 1 10 and designating April 12, 2001, as Osteoporosis 1 11 Awareness Day. 1 12 WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a condition of reduced 1 13 bone mass that primarily affects women, resulting in 1 14 crippling bone fractures; and 1 15 WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a progressive disease that 1 16 generally is revealed with bone fractures occurring in 1 17 the hips, spine, and wrists; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the prevalence of osteoporosis in Iowa 1 19 continues to grow, with an estimated one out of every 1 20 three women and one out of every eight men in Iowa 1 21 affected, and by 2015, the Iowa Department of Public 1 22 Health estimates the annual cost to Iowans for 1 23 treatment, and long-term care, and other needs could 1 24 reach $229 million; and 1 25 WHEREAS, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed 1 26 with education, regular exercise beginning in 1 27 childhood, and proper nutrition, especially 1 28 consumption of calcium; and 1 29 WHEREAS, low-bone density and osteoporosis can be 1 30 detected through bone density testing and treated with 2 1 certain medications; and 2 2 WHEREAS, bone density testing is noninvasive, and 2 3 can be conducted simply and painlessly; and 2 4 WHEREAS, the Iowa Osteoporosis Coalition, Inc., the 2 5 Iowa Pharmacy Association, and Hy-Vee Food Stores are 2 6 recognized as contributors to making bone density 2 7 testing more available, in part by providing bone 2 8 density testing at the Capitol in conjunction with 2 9 Osteoporosis Awareness Day on April 12, 2001; and 2 10 WHEREAS, educational efforts to raise awareness 2 11 regarding osteoporosis should be targeted both to 2 12 youth, who are increasingly substituting consumption 2 13 of soft drinks in place of milk, and to adults; NOW 2 14 THEREFORE, 2 15 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF 2 16 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General 2 17 Assembly designates April 12, 2001, as Osteoporosis 2 18 Awareness Day. 2 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Iowa health care 2 20 professionals, county health departments, public and 2 21 private schools, hospitals, area agencies on aging, 2 22 employer-operated wellness programs, health care 2 23 insurers, health care benefit management 2 24 organizations, women's groups, nonprofit 2 25 organizations, professional associations, religious 2 26 and other community-based organizations, and others 2 27 who can provide educational information to youth and 2 28 adults are encouraged to provide general educational 2 29 information to the public concerning osteoporosis, as 2 30 well as the methods for preventing osteoporosis, the 3 1 importance of bone density testing and other means of 3 2 detecting low-bone density osteoporosis, and 3 3 approaches for treating osteoporosis. 3 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa Osteoporosis 3 5 Coalition, Inc., the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and 3 6 Hy-Vee Food Stores are thanked for providing bone 3 7 density testing at the Capitol in conjunction with 3 8 Osteoporosis Awareness Day. 3 9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage of this 3 10 Resolution, an official copy shall be sent by the 3 11 Secretary of the Senate to the Iowa Department of 3 12 Public Health for dissemination as part of its efforts 3 13 to educate the public concerning osteoporosis. 3 14 LSB 3577SS 79 3 15 vl/gg/8
