PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY (PROPOSED COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE RESOLUTION 1 3 BY CHAIRPERSON KLEMME) 1 4 A Concurrent Resolution honoring Herb Plambeck. 1 5 WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck has been the "voice of the family 1 6 farm" since joining WHO radio in Des Moines in 1936 as the 1 7 first full-time farm broadcaster in the nation hired by a 1 8 commercial radio station, a position he held for 34 years; and 1 9 WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck also traveled the world as a news 1 10 correspondent, reporting from battlefields and palaces, 1 11 interviewing 10 United States presidents as well as kings and 1 12 dictators, and being among the first Americans to enter Adolf 1 13 Hitler's mountaintop retreat at the close of World War II; and 1 14 WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck's career spanned the decades from 1 15 his early farm days plowing in Scott County, through 1 16 attendance at Iowa State University, work as a newspaper farm 1 17 editor in Davenport, his years at WHO, and service as 1 18 assistant to two United States secretarys of agriculture, to a 1 19 weekend gardening radio program and guest appearances on WHO 1 20 until his recent death; and 1 21 WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck made historical first radio farm 1 22 broadcast reports from the Soviet Union in 1955 and the 1 23 People's Republic of China in 1976; and 1 24 WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck wrote numerous newspaper and 1 25 magazine articles, 11 books and booklets, was awarded honor 1 26 and acclaim, but took his greatest pleasure in public service, 1 27 earning the trust of Iowa's farm families through his hard 1 28 work and honesty; NOW THEREFORE, 1 29 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE SENATE 1 30 CONCURRING, That the General Assembly recognizes Herb Plambeck 1 31 posthumously for his achievements, recognizing not only his 1 32 career accomplishments but also his contribution to Iowa's 1 33 family farm heritage; and 1 34 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That members of the General 1 35 Assembly, including members serving on the committees on 2 1 Agriculture, bids farewell to Herb Plambeck remembering 2 2 "that's the way it was"; and 2 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the House 2 4 of Representatives deliver a copy of this resolution to Laura 2 5 Plambeck of Des Moines, Mary Munger of Sioux City, and James 2 6 Plambeck of Ames. 2 7 LSB 1991HC 79 2 8 vl/cf/24
