PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.___ 1 2 BY LENSING, MYERS, MASCHER, and FOEGE 1 3 A Resolution recognizing the success of the University 1 4 of Iowa Dance Marathon. 1 5 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa Dance Marathon 1 6 began in 1994, and has operated in conjunction with 1 7 the Children's Miracle Network to provide emotional 1 8 and financial support to families with children 1 9 treated by the Children's Hospital of Iowa at the 1 10 University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, primarily 1 11 those children being treated for cancer; and 1 12 WHEREAS, during its existence, the University of 1 13 Iowa Dance Marathon has generated over $2 million, has 1 14 grown from sponsoring 26 families to sponsoring 200 1 15 families, and has become one of the largest student- 1 16 run philanthropies in the western United States; and 1 17 WHEREAS, the support provided to these children and 1 18 families by the dance marathon continues throughout 1 19 the year in the form of payment of patient bills, 1 20 camper sponsorship for the Heart Connection's summer 1 21 camps, Friday breakfasts at the University of Iowa 1 22 Hospitals and Clinics, research, children's materials, 1 23 and many other events and supports; and 1 24 WHEREAS, during the dance marathon held February 1 1 25 through February 2, 2002, 900 marathoners danced for 1 26 24 hours with the support of over 400 additional 1 27 volunteers to raise $519,990.70; and, 1 28 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa Hospitals and 1 29 Clinics named its pediatric blood and marrow 1 30 transplant unit the "UI Dance Marathon Pediatric Blood 2 1 and Marrow Transplant Unit" to honor the hard work, 2 2 dedication, and financial contributions of the dance 2 3 marathoners; and 2 4 WHEREAS, beginning in April 2002, the unit will 2 5 provide state-of-the-art cancer treatment and, as 2 6 importantly, will provide space for family members to 2 7 sleep in the same room with the child receiving 2 8 treatments and through a special filtration system 2 9 will enable children to leave their rooms while 2 10 recovering from a transplant; and 2 11 WHEREAS, a record 600 family members from the 200 2 12 sponsored families attended the 2002 marathon to 2 13 demonstrate their gratitude and support of the 2 14 marathoners; and 2 15 WHEREAS, in the words of pediatric blood and marrow 2 16 transplant unit director Dr. Fred Goldman, "... it's 2 17 difficult to express the depth of our gratitude for 2 18 what these wonderful dedicated people have done"; NOW 2 19 THEREFORE, 2 20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 2 21 That the House of Representatives adds its words of 2 22 gratitude to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon 2 23 participants for their determination, unflagging 2 24 spirit, and support of children and their families who 2 25 are fighting cancer and other diseases, and wishes the 2 26 University of Iowa Dance Marathon success in its 2 27 future efforts; and 2 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of 2 29 Representatives recommends that all adult Iowans take 2 30 on the challenge of Ms. Kristin Vasilenko, Morale 3 1 Captain 2002 for the Iowa Dance Marathon, who stated: 3 2 "If I could encourage you all to do one important 3 3 thing with your life it would be to have a special 3 4 relationship with a child; they can teach you more 3 5 than you would ever imagine." 3 6 LSB 7081HH 79 3 7 pf/cls/14
