  1  3    DOTZLER, FALLON, WITT, MASCHER, JENKINS, SHOULTZ,
  1  4       LENSING, HANSEN, HOVERSTEN, CHIODO, JACOBS,
  1  5                       and KLEMME
  1  6 A House Resolution honoring Goodwill Industries
  1  7    International in its centennial year.
  1  8    WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.
  1  9 turns 100 years old in 2002; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries International is the
  1 11 world's largest private sector employer of people with
  1 12 disabilities and has served more than 5 million people
  1 13 in its first 100 years; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Goodwill member organizations help
  1 15 individuals succeed in the workplace and in life by
  1 16 providing job training, job placement, and support for
  1 17 people with physical, financial, and educational
  1 18 challenges; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, five autonomous Goodwills serve the State
  1 20 of Iowa, with services provided in all quadrants of
  1 21 the state, including Sioux City, Waterloo, Des Moines,
  1 22 Council Bluffs, and Iowa City; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the five Goodwills serving Iowa make a
  1 24 significant contribution in the reduction, reuse, and
  1 25 recycling of goods by diverting millions of pounds of
  1 26 household goods from Iowa landfills each year; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, the founder of Goodwill Industries
  1 28 International, Dr. Edgar J. Helms, had Iowa roots,
  1 29 having arrived in Iowa by covered wagon in 1865,
  1 30 spending his youth on a farm near East Lake Okoboji,
  2  1 working on newspapers in Spirit Lake, Peterson, and
  2  2 Sioux Rapids, and receiving his college degree from
  2  3 Cornell College in Mount Vernon; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, the vision of Goodwill Industries is more
  2  5 than 100 years old, but the concept and practice
  2  6 remains relevant today, with 180 member organizations
  2  7 in the United States, Canada, and the Pacific Basin,
  2  8 and another 45 associate member organizations located
  2  9 in 34 countries; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries has changed and
  2 11 adapted today to meet the needs of society; the three
  2 12 concepts of Goodwill as envisioned by Dr. Helms –
  2 13 Community, Independence, Dignity – remain constant
  2 14 and are embodied in the provision of work which
  2 15 enables individuals to contribute and participate in
  2 16 the economic and social vitality of the community,
  2 17 which gives the satisfaction and freedom of self-
  2 18 support, and which fosters self-esteem and the pride
  2 19 of accomplishment; and
  2 20    WHEREAS, the Council of Iowa Goodwill Industries
  2 21 served more than 4,000 men, women, and children in
  2 22 2001; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 23    BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 24 That Dr. Edgar J. Helms be regarded as an Iowa
  2 25 treasure, whose leadership and vision gave birth to
  2 26 Goodwill Industries International, Inc., and to the
  2 27 establishment of five member Goodwills serving the
  2 28 State of Iowa, thereby creating opportunities for and
  2 29 helping thousands of Iowans toward brighter futures;
  2 30 and
  3  1    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
  3  2 Representatives extends its thanks and congratulations
  3  3 to Goodwill Industries International, Inc. and the
  3  4 five Goodwills that serve the State of Iowa as they
  3  5 celebrate their centennial year in 2002; and
  3  6    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  3  7 House of Representatives prepare an official copy of
  3  8 this Resolution to be presented to Goodwill Industries
  3  9 International, Inc. and the five Goodwills that serve
  3 10 the State of Iowa.
