1 2 BY LARSON
1 3 A Resolution designating April 14, 2001, as Pan
1 4 American Day, and the week of April 8 through 14,
1 5 2001, as Pan American Week.
1 6 WHEREAS, the Organization of American States,
1 7 formerly known as the American Republics of the Inter-
1 8 American System, will celebrate its one hundred
1 9 eleventh anniversary on April 14, 2001; and
1 10 WHEREAS, circumstances of culture, geography, and
1 11 history have allied the destinies of the United States
1 12 and neighboring republics as defenders of liberty
1 13 within the law; and
1 14 WHEREAS, for the common safety of the Inter-
1 15 American system, the United States of America has
1 16 supported the ideals of cooperation and solidarity
1 17 throughout the past century; and
1 18 WHEREAS, with the understanding of promoting
1 19 freedom and democracy for all, the United States
1 20 people and government have allied themselves with
1 21 their western hemispheric neighbors in the hope of
1 22 maintaining peace throughout the world; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the countries of North, Central, and South
1 24 America should honor the past and claim the future
1 25 together; NOW THEREFORE,
1 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
1 27 That April 14, 2001, is designated Pan American Day,
1 28 and the week of April 8 through 14, 2001, is
1 29 designated Pan American Week.
1 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
2 1 Representatives encourages the citizens of Iowa to
2 2 recognize the importance of this day and week to
2 3 Inter-American friendship and the neighboring
2 4 republics' national welfare.
