1 17 A Resolution recognizing the achievements of Nancy Coover
  1 18 Andreasen.
  1 19 WHEREAS, Nancy Coover Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., the
1 20 Andrew Woods Chair of Psychiatry, University of Iowa
1 21 College of Medicine, Editor of the American Journal of
1 22 Psychiatry, and author of hundreds of articles and
1 23 books including "The Broken Brain: The Biological
1 24 Revolution in Psychiatry" in 1984, is recognized
1 25 internationally for her distinguished contributions as
1 26 an educator, author, researcher, and provider of
1 27 mental health services in the field of psychiatry; and
1 28 WHEREAS, in her over 30 years of study and research
1 29 in the field of psychiatry, Dr. Andreasen has been a
1 30 leader and a visionary in her profession by, in
2 1 addition to her vast number of other accomplishments,
2 2 developing a tool to evaluate psychiatric
2 3 abnormalities and to rank their severity, which
2 4 evolved into a tool to rate symptoms of schizophrenia
2 5 becoming a "citation classic," cited more than the
2 6 works of Sigmund and Anna Freud combined; utilizing
2 7 neuroimaging to pinpoint and measure the biological
2 8 basis of human behavior in mental illness,
2 9 particularly schizophrenia; and being the first to
  2 10 demonstrate a relationship between manic-depressive
2 11 illness and creativity; and
2 12 WHEREAS, while Dr. Andreasen has been recognized by
2 13 her peers for her contributions to her profession with
2 14 numerous honors and awards, she is also recognized for
2 15 her compassion toward her patients, as an advocate for
2 16 persons with chronic mental illness, and as a person
2 17 who through her unique ability to make brain research
2 18 understandable to the public has provided relief and
2 19 hope to persons with mental illness and their
  2 20 families; and
2 21 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen once analogized the need for
2 22 a vision of the future in scientific research to
2 23 hockey, recalling a quote from Wayne Gretzky: "I
  2 24 skate to where the puck will be, not to where it is";
  2 25 and
2 26 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen has received numerous
2 27 honors, including most recently the President's
2 28 National Medal of Science on December 1, 2000, which
2 29 has only been awarded to 374 distinguished scientists
2 30 and engineers and to only three Iowans since its
  3 1 inception in 1959; and
3 2 WHEREAS, the inscription on the President's
3 3 National Medal of Science awarded to Dr. Andreasen
3 4 reads, "For her pivotal contributions to the social
3 5 and behavioral sciences, through the integrative study
3 6 of mind, brain, and behavior, by joining behavioral
3 7 science with the technologies of neuroscience and
3 8 neuroimaging in order to understand mental processes
3 9 such as memory and creativity, and mental illnesses
3 10 such as schizophrenia"; and
3 11 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen's humility in the midst of
3 12 all the acclaim is best typified by her own words in
3 13 acknowledging her most recent award: "I am a firm
3 14 believer that the importance of one's work is the
3 15 process of doing it, not in getting awards. When I
  3 16 die, I don't care what prizes I won. I care about
3 17 what contributions I can make through my work"; NOW
  3 18 THEREFORE,
3 19 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
3 20 That the House of Representatives recognizes Dr.
3 21 Andreasen not only as an award-winning,
3 22 internationally acknowledged psychiatrist, educator,
3 23 researcher, and author, but as an Iowa treasure who
3 24 through her genuine compassion and dedication has
3 25 improved the lives of and has provided hope and
3 26 understanding to persons with mental illness and their
  3 27 families.
