  1  1    Section 1.  PREFERRED DRUG FORMULARY.  The department of
  1  2 workforce development, the department of human services, and
  1  3 the Iowa prescription drug corporation, to the greatest extent
  1  4 possible and allowed under state and federal law and
  1  5 regulation, shall develop and utilize the same preferred drug
  1  6 formulary for prescription drugs purchased under programs
  1  7 under the purview of either department or the Iowa
  1  8 prescription drug corporation.  The departments and the Iowa
  1  9 prescription drug corporation shall submit a report to the
  1 10 governor and the general assembly by October 1, 2002,
  1 11 regarding progress in the development and implementation of
  1 12 the preferred drug formulary.  
  1 13                           EXPLANATION 
  1 14    This bill directs the department of workforce development,
  1 15 the department of human services, and the Iowa prescription
  1 16 drug corporation, to the greatest extent possible and allowed
  1 17 under law and regulation, to develop and utilize the same
  1 18 preferred drug formulary for prescription drugs purchased
  1 19 under programs under the purview of either department or the
  1 20 Iowa prescription drug corporation.  The bill requires that a
  1 21 progress report be submitted to the governor and the general
  1 22 assembly by October 1, 2002.
  1 23    The Iowa prescription drug corporation is a nonprofit
  1 24 corporation that was organized in July 2001 to establish the
  1 25 Iowa priority prescription savings program.  The corporation
  1 26 received start-up moneys from the federal government.  The
  1 27 Iowa priority prescription savings program provides Medicare-
  1 28 eligible Iowans with reduced-cost prescription drugs through
  1 29 negotiated agreements with pharmacy companies.  The program
  1 30 also offers to have a pharmacist perform a comprehensive
  1 31 review of all prescription and over-the-counter medications
  1 32 and herbal remedies used by a Medicare-eligible Iowan.
