PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 256.9, Code Supplement 2001, is amended 1 2 by adding the following new subsection: 1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 51. Develop and make available to school 1 4 districts, accredited nonpublic schools, and area education 1 5 agencies, model money management curricula for the elementary 1 6 and secondary grades. The director shall also design and make 1 7 available a statewide model for staff development for teaching 1 8 money management. The materials developed shall include 1 9 developmentally appropriate information and activities for 1 10 teaching students about income management, credit, assets, 1 11 decision making, opportunity cost, financial plans, saving, 1 12 spending, interest, and budgeting. The materials shall be 1 13 designed so that teachers may integrate the materials into 1 14 other elementary and secondary school subject areas and may 1 15 develop partnerships with private financial institutions in 1 16 order to provide students with applied money management 1 17 knowledge and to improve the students' applied skills. The 1 18 models shall be available to school districts, accredited 1 19 nonpublic schools, and area education agencies for 1 20 implementation by the school year beginning July 1, 2004. 1 21 EXPLANATION 1 22 This bill directs the director of the department of 1 23 education to develop model money management curricula for the 1 24 elementary and secondary grades, along with a statewide model 1 25 for staff development for teaching money management, and to 1 26 make the models available to school districts, accredited 1 27 nonpublic schools, and area education agencies for 1 28 implementation by the school year beginning July 1, 2004. 1 29 The materials developed must include developmentally 1 30 appropriate information and activities, must be designed for 1 31 integration into other elementary and secondary school subject 1 32 areas, and must provide opportunities for developing 1 33 partnerships with private financial institutions in order to 1 34 provide students with applied money management knowledge and 1 35 skills. 2 1 LSB 6231HH 79 2 2 kh/pj/5
