1 1 Section 1. FEDERAL FUNDING FOR TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION –
1 2 STUDY. The department of education shall explore the
1 3 availability of federal funding for technology in education to
1 4 determine whether federal moneys may be obtained by the state
1 5 for distribution to school districts for use in the lease-
1 6 purchase of laptop computers for teachers or to subscribe to
1 7 web-based student information systems. The department shall
1 8 make every reasonable effort to obtain any federal funding
1 9 available for those purposes and shall submit its conclusions
1 10 in a report to the chairpersons and ranking members of the
1 11 senate and house standing committees on education and the
1 12 joint appropriations subcommittee on education by December 15,
1 13 2002.
1 14 EXPLANATION
1 15 This bill directs the department of education to explore
1 16 the availability of federal funding for education technology
1 17 to determine whether the state can access federal moneys with
1 18 which school districts may lease-purchase laptop computers for
1 19 teachers or subscribe to web-based student information
1 20 systems. The bill directs the department to make every
1 21 reasonable effort to obtain any available federal funding and
1 22 to submit its conclusions in a report to the chairpersons and
1 23 ranking members of the senate and house standing committees on
1 24 education and the joint appropriations subcommittee on
1 25 education by December 15, 2002.
