1 1 Section 1. REVIEW OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS.
1 2 1. The department of education shall review the
1 3 educational standards adopted for physical education under
1 4 section 256.11, subsections 3, 4, and 5, for children in
1 5 grades one through six, grades seven and eight, and grades
1 6 nine through twelve.
1 7 2. In reviewing the standards for physical education, the
1 8 department shall consider the current level of health and
1 9 physical fitness prevalent among students and ways to ensure
1 10 students perform adequate physical exercise. The review shall
1 11 include approaches used in other states' educational programs.
1 12 In addition, the review shall include proposals and research
1 13 available from national programs and experts such as
1 14 "P.E.4LIFE", the national association for sport and physical
1 15 education, and the American alliance for health, physical
1 16 education, recreation, and dance.
1 17 3. The department shall submit a report of its findings
1 18 and recommendations to the governor and general assembly on or
1 19 before December 14, 2001. The recommendations shall address
1 20 ways to expose students to the greatest variety of physical
1 21 activities, to instill knowledge of the importance of good
1 22 physical fitness to general health and a desire for lifelong
1 23 physical activity, and to reduce the level of obesity in the
1 24 state.
1 25 EXPLANATION
1 26 This bill directs the department of education to perform a
1 27 review of the educational standards for physical education for
1 28 students in the three grade level divisions used for grades
1 29 one through 12. The review is to include the current level of
1 30 physical fitness prevalent among students and approaches
1 31 advocated by various national groups. The department is to
1 32 report to the governor and general assembly with findings and
1 33 recommendations by December 14, 2001.
