1 1 Section 1. Section 307.21, Code 2001, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 5A. When purchasing special diesel fuel,
1 4 give preference to biodiesel fuel for use in the department's
1 5 motor vehicles that operate on diesel fuel. A department
1 6 motor vehicle operating on biodiesel fuel shall be affixed
1 7 with a brightly visible sticker which notifies the traveling
1 8 public that the motor vehicle uses biodiesel fuel. For
1 9 purposes of this section, "biodiesel fuel" means soydiesel
1 10 fuel as defined in section 159A.2.
1 11 Sec. 2. STATUS OF PILOT PROJECT. Section 307.21,
1 12 subsection 5A, as enacted by this Act, shall have no effect on
1 13 the status of the biodiesel fuel pilot project provided for in
1 14 2000 Iowa Acts, chapter 1018, sections 2 and 3.
1 15 EXPLANATION
1 16 This bill directs the state department of transportation's
1 17 administrator of administrative services to give preference to
1 18 biodiesel fuel when purchasing fuel for department motor
1 19 vehicles that operate on diesel fuel.
1 20 The bill requires department motor vehicles operating on
1 21 biodiesel fuel to be affixed with a sticker notifying the
1 22 traveling public that the vehicle uses biodiesel fuel. The
1 23 bill defines "biodiesel fuel", for purposes of the bill, as
1 24 "soydiesel fuel" as defined in Code section 159A.2.
1 25 The bill also provides that the new provision shall not
1 26 affect the status of a biodiesel fuel pilot project provided
1 27 for by the 2000 General Assembly. The project is an ongoing
1 28 biodiesel fuel pilot project that began September 1, 2000.
1 29 The project is being conducted at two of the department's
1 30 field garages and is to continue for as long as the department
1 31 has sufficient funding for the project. The project was
1 32 contingent upon an appropriation to the department for fiscal
1 33 year 2000-2001 for the purchase of biodiesel fuel for the
1 34 project.
