  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  255.31  PROVISION OF TREATMENT AT
  1  2 ADDITIONAL LOCATIONS.
  1  3    For the purposes of this chapter, treatment may be provided
  1  4 to indigent patients by any hospital licensed pursuant to
  1  5 chapter 135B if the university hospital has contracted with
  1  6 the hospital to provide such treatment.  The determination of
  1  7 the location of treatment shall be established in the order
  1  8 entered pursuant to section 255.8 and the basis for
  1  9 determination of the location shall be that the hospital is
  1 10 able to provide the nearest safe and adequate treatment
  1 11 possible for the patient.
  1 12    Sec. 2.  UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL – CONTRACT WITH BROADLAWNS
  1 13 MEDICAL CENTER TO PROVIDE CARE TO INDIGENT PATIENTS.
  1 14 Beginning July 1, 2001, as a condition of the appropriation to
  1 15 the university hospital for treatment of indigent patients as
  1 16 provided in chapter 255, the university hospital shall
  1 17 contract with Broadlawns medical center to provide treatment
  1 18 to indigent patients for whom such treatment would be the
  1 19 nearest safe and adequate treatment possible for the patient.
  1 20 The order directing treatment pursuant to section 255.8 shall
  1 21 specify the hospital at which treatment shall be provided.
  1 22 Under the contract, Broadlawns medical center shall agree to
  1 23 accept as full payment the reimbursements allowed under the
  1 24 medical assistance program established pursuant to chapter
  1 25 249A, adjusted for intensity of care.  
  1 26                           EXPLANATION 
  1 27    This bill provides that indigent care provided under Code
  1 28 chapter 255 may be provided at licensed hospitals other than
  1 29 the university hospital if the hospital has contracted with
  1 30 the university hospital to provide indigent care treatment.
  1 31 The determination of where treatment will be provided for a
  1 32 specific patient is to be established in the court order and
  1 33 the basis for the determination is to be that the hospital
  1 34 selected is able to provide the nearest safe and adequate
  1 35 treatment possible.
  2  1    The bill also requires that as a condition of the
  2  2 appropriation to the university hospital for the indigent
  2  3 patient program under Code chapter 255, the university
  2  4 hospital is to contract with Broadlawns medical center to
  2  5 provide treatment to indigent patients for whom treatment at
  2  6 the center would be the nearest safe and adequate treatment
  2  7 possible.  The contract is to specify that Broadlawns medical
  2  8 center would accept as full payment for treatment provided the
  2  9 reimbursements allowable under the medical assistance program,
  2 10 adjusted for intensity of care.
