  1  2                       BY  HORBACH
  1  3 A Concurrent Resolution honoring the Iowa Big Brothers
  1  4    Big Sisters Association during the week beginning
  1  5    March 25, 2002.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the Iowa Big Brothers Big Sisters
  1  7 Association consists of 11 nationally affiliated Big
  1  8 Brothers Big Sisters organizations located throughout
  1  9 Iowa; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters
  1 11 organizations is to make a positive difference in the
  1 12 lives of children and youth, primarily through a
  1 13 professionally supported one-to-one relationship with
  1 14 a caring adult, and to assist children and youth in
  1 15 achieving their highest potential as they grow to
  1 16 become confident, competent, and caring individuals,
  1 17 by providing committed volunteers, national
  1 18 leadership, and standards of excellence; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, more than 2,000 children are receiving
  1 20 one-to-one mentoring services in this state through
  1 21 the Iowa association; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, national studies have shown the positive
  1 23 results for those children participating in Big
  1 24 Brothers Big Sisters programs in avoiding the use of
  1 25 alcohol and other drugs, completing education,
  1 26 reducing the use of violence, and improving family
  1 27 relationships; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, there is a need for additional adult
  1 29 mentors as there are over 700 children waiting for a
  1 30 big brother or big sister match; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  1    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  2 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
  2  3 recognizes the week beginning March 25, 2002, as Big
  2  4 Brothers Big Sisters week, in honor of the Iowa Big
  2  5 Brothers Big Sisters Association and its members:
  2  6    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids & East
  2  7 Central Iowa
  2  8    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton
  2  9    Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Quad Cities
  2 10    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, Inc.
  2 11    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dubuque County
  2 12    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County
  2 13    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Great River
  2 14    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marshall County, Inc.
  2 15    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Muscatine County
  2 16    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland
  2 17    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa; and
  2 18    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the citizens of Iowa
  2 19 are encouraged to support the member organizations of
  2 20 the Iowa Big Brothers Big Sisters Association with
  2 21 contributions and volunteer time so that the
  2 22 organizations may serve all of the children in all of
  2 23 the counties of the state in which there is a need.
