1 1 Section 1. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. There is appropriated
1 2 from the general fund of the state to the department of
1 3 education for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2000, and
1 4 ending June 30, 2001, the following amount, or so much thereof
1 5 as is necessary, to be used for the purpose designated:
1 6 For the establishment of pilot regional academies in
1 7 cooperation with school districts, area education agencies,
1 8 and postsecondary institutions:
1 9 .................................................. $ 300,000
1 10 Funds appropriated pursuant to this section shall be used
1 11 to award grant moneys to enable pilot regional academies to
1 12 provide high school students with advanced level courses and
1 13 technical courses not currently available within the
1 14 curriculum in their district of attendance. The department
1 15 shall submit a report on the status of the projects receiving
1 16 grants under this section to the senate and house standing
1 17 committees on education and the joint appropriations
1 18 subcommittee on education by December 1, 2000.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This bill appropriates moneys from the general fund of the
1 21 state to the department of education for fiscal year 2000-2001
1 22 for the establishment of pilot regional academies in
1 23 cooperation with school districts, area education agencies,
1 24 and postsecondary institutions. The moneys are to be issued
1 25 as grants to enable pilot regional academies to provide high
1 26 school students with advanced level courses and technical
1 27 courses unavailable in their school districts.
1 28 The department is instructed to submit a report on the
1 29 status of the grant projects to the general assembly's
1 30 education committees by December 1, 2000.
