1 1 Section 1. Section 236.12, Code 1999, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 5. When a police officer arrests a person
1 4 for domestic abuse assault under section 708.2A, pursuant to
1 5 this section or otherwise, the officer shall provide the
1 6 person with the following notice, in addition to any other
1 7 notification required by law:
1 8 "If you are not a citizen of the United States, you are
1 9 hereby advised that conviction of the offense for which you
1 10 have been arrested may have the consequences of deportation,
1 11 exclusion from admission to the United States, or denial of
1 12 naturalization, pursuant to the laws of the United States."
1 13 EXPLANATION
1 14 This bill adds a notification requirement when a police
1 15 officer makes an arrest for domestic abuse assault to inform
1 16 noncitizens that conviction of the offense may have certain
1 17 consequences under United States immigration law.
