  1  4 RELATING TO THE TAKING OF MUSKRATS BY COLONY TRAP.

  1  6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

  1  8    Section 1.  Section 481A.92, unnumbered paragraph 1, Code
  1  9 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1 10    Except as otherwise provided in this chapter a A person
  1 11 shall not use or attempt to use colony traps in taking,
  1 12 capturing, trapping, or killing any game or fur-bearing
  1 13 animals except muskrats as determined by rule of the
  1 14 commission.  Box traps capable of capturing more than one game
  1 15 or fur-bearing animal at each setting are prohibited.  A valid
  1 16 hunting license is required for box trapping cottontail
  1 17 rabbits and squirrels.  All traps and snares used for the
  1 18 taking of fur-bearing animals shall have a metal tag attached
  1 19 plainly labeled with the user's name and address.  All traps
  1 20 and snares, except those which are placed entirely under
  1 21 water, shall be checked at least once every twenty-four hours.
  1 22 Officers appointed by the department may confiscate such traps
  1 23 and snares found in use that are not properly labeled or
  1 24 checked.
