1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 280.24A DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING
1 2 OF STUDENTS IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
1 3 The board of directors of each public school and the
1 4 authorities in charge of each accredited nonpublic school may
1 5 permit and prescribe procedures governing drug or alcohol
1 6 testing of students who seek to participate in school-
1 7 sponsored extracurricular activities.
1 8 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 808A.5 APPLICABILITY.
1 9 This chapter shall not apply to a search of a student who
1 10 seeks to participate in school-sponsored extracurricular
1 11 activities for purposes of conducting a drug or alcohol test
1 12 on a sample obtained from the student.
1 13 EXPLANATION
1 14 The bill permits public and private schools to conduct drug
1 15 or alcohol testing of students who seek to participate in
1 16 extracurricular activities and may prescribe procedures
1 17 governing such testing.
1 18 The bill also exempts drug and alcohol testing of students
1 19 who seek to participate in school-sponsored extracurricular
1 20 activities from the requirements of Code chapter 808A
1 21 otherwise governing student searches, such as locker searches.
