1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO SCR 10)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution requesting the Department of
1 5 Education to cooperate with the Iowa Arts Council
1 6 in administering a contest for students to submit
1 7 design proposals for Iowa's participation in the
1 8 United States Mint's 50 state quarters program.
1 9 WHEREAS, the United States Mint has implemented a
1 10 program in accordance with Public Law No. 105-124, to
1 11 commemorate each of the 50 states in the order in
1 12 which the states ratified the United States
1 13 Constitution and joined the Union; and
1 14 WHEREAS, for the 10-year period 1999 through 2008,
1 15 the United States will annually issue five quarter
1 16 dollar coins with state designs displayed on the
1 17 reverse side of the coins; and
1 18 WHEREAS, each state has an opportunity to develop
1 19 and submit designs representative of the state; and
1 20 WHEREAS, during World War II the five Sullivan
1 21 brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, and their surviving family
1 22 members became an enduring national symbol of the
1 23 importance of families in Iowa, following the
1 24 brothers' death upon the sinking of the U.S.S. Juneau
1 25 and the subsequent involvement of their parents and
1 26 sister in the war effort; and
1 27 WHEREAS, Iowa entered the Union as the twenty-ninth
1 28 state on December 28, 1846, and the quarter dollar
1 29 honoring the state of Iowa will be issued in 2004
1 30 along with Michigan, Florida, Texas, and Wisconsin;
2 1 and
2 2 WHEREAS, the Governor will be contacted no later
2 3 than 2002 concerning Iowa's design submission; NOW
2 4 THEREFORE,
2 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 6 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Department of
2 7 Education is requested to cooperate with the Iowa Arts
2 8 Council in administering a contest for students
2 9 attending school in kindergarten through twelfth grade
2 10 to develop designs relating to the renowned Sullivan
2 11 brothers as a symbol for the state to submit to the
2 12 United States Mint for the Iowa quarter dollar; and
2 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the contest should be
2 14 completed by May 1, 2000, and the exemplary designs
2 15 submitted to the Governor.
