  1  9         LAMBERTI, GRONSTAL, IVERSON, SCHUERER,
  1 10         CONNOLLY, KIBBIE, REHBERG, and VEENSTRA 
  1 11 A Senate Concurrent Resolution urging that Iowa State
  1 12    University of Science and Technology retain the
  1 13    name of its College of Agriculture.
  1 14    WHEREAS, In 1858, the Iowa General Assembly enacted
  1 15 and Governor Lowe signed into law legislation
  1 16 authorizing the creation of and the expenditure of
  1 17 moneys for land and improvements for an agricultural
  1 18 college; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, during the university's history and
  1 20 various reorganizations, including President
  1 21 Beardshear's reorganization in 1896, the College of
  1 22 Agriculture has developed a long-standing, well-earned
  1 23 reputation for achieving scientific and technological
  1 24 advances in agriculture; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, the College of Agriculture is
  1 26 fundamentally charged to support agriculture in this
  1 27 state, including by preparing undergraduate and
  1 28 graduate students; conducting basic and applied
  1 29 research; and providing outreach services critical to
  1 30 the success of farming; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, Iowa State University of Science and
  2  2 Technology is considering changing the renowned name
  2  3 of this world-famous college which holds a cherished
  2  4 place in the hearts of generations of farmers and this
  2  5 state's agricultural community; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, proposed replacement names, such as the
  2  7 College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural
  2  8 Resources, do not convey the essence of the college's
  2  9 mission and appear embellished, difficult to remember,
  2 10 and contrary to the direct approach traditionally
  2 11 favored by farmers; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 12    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2 13 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That Iowa State University
  2 14 of Science and Technology is urged to retain the
  2 15 world-renowned name of its College of Agriculture; and
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
  2 17 Senate send copies of this Resolution to the State
  2 18 Board of Regents, the President of Iowa State
  2 19 University of Science and Technology, and the Dean of
  2 20 the College of Agriculture.
