  1  1    Amend House File 656, as passed by the House, as
  1  2 follows:
  1  3    #1.  Page 13, by inserting after line 31, the
  1  4 following:
  1  5    "Sec.    .  Section 49.73, subsection 2, Code 1999,
  1  6 is amended to read as follows:
  1  7    2.  The commissioner shall not shorten voting hours
  1  8 for any election if there is filed in the
  1  9 commissioner's office, at least twenty-five days
  1 10 before the election, a petition signed by at least
  1 11 fifty eligible electors of the school district or
  1 12 city, as the case may be, requesting that the polls be
  1 13 opened not later than seven o'clock a.m.  All polling
  1 14 places where the candidates of or any public question
  1 15 submitted by any one political subdivision are being
  1 16 voted upon shall be opened at the same hour, except
  1 17 that this requirement shall not apply to merged areas
  1 18 established under chapter 260C.  The hours at which
  1 19 the respective precinct polling places are to open
  1 20 shall not be changed after publication of the notice
  1 21 required by section 49.53.  The polling places shall
  1 22 be closed at nine o'clock eight p.m. for state primary
  1 23 and general elections and other partisan elections,
  1 24 and for any other election held concurrently
  1 25 therewith, and at eight o'clock p.m. for all other
  1 26 elections."
