  1  2              BY  (PROPOSED COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
  1  3              RESOLUTION BY CHAIRPERSON GRUNDBERG)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing and endorsing Read
  1  5    Across America Day, and calling for the citizens of
  1  6    the State of Iowa to reaffirm the importance and the
  1  7    joy of reading.
  1  8    WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Iowa are firmly
  1  9 committed to promoting reading as a catalyst for the academic
  1 10 success of Iowa students; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, the academic success of Iowa students will prepare
  1 12 them to effectively compete for and excel at employment
  1 13 opportunities in the global economy of the future; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, the State of Iowa has traditionally provided
  1 15 significant leadership in the area of education, grounded in
  1 16 the principle that education is vital to the state's well-
  1 17 being and long-term quality of life; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, Tuesday, March 2, 1999, is the birthday of the
  1 19 noted children's author, Theodore Geisel, also known as Dr.
  1 20 Seuss, and has been designated Read Across America Day in
  1 21 celebration of his birthday and in promotion of reading and
  1 22 adult involvement in children's education; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 23    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE SENATE
  1 24 CONCURRING, That the General Assembly of the State of Iowa
  1 25 recognizes and endorses Tuesday, March 2, 1999, as Read Across
  1 26 America Day; and calls upon the citizens of the state to
  1 27 reaffirm to Iowa students the importance and the joy of
  1 28 reading and to recommit our state resources to promote and
  1 29 provide programs and activities to make Iowa students the best
  1 30 readers in the world; and
  1 31    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be
  1 32 sent to the state Department of Education for distribution
  1 33 throughout the state's primary and secondary level education
  1 34 system, and for coordination of media promotion of Read Across
  1 35 America Day.
