  1  3 A House Resolution honoring bass-baritone singer
  1  4    Simon Estes.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Simon Estes was born in Centerville, Iowa,
  1  6 attended the University of Iowa and was granted an
  1  7 honorary degree from Iowa State University; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Simon Estes was admitted to the Julliard
  1  9 School of Music in New York City in 1964 and has been
  1 10 a professor at that esteemed institution since 1985;
  1 11 and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Simon Estes made his professional debut as
  1 13 Ramfis in Aida at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin in
  1 14 1965, his Bayreuth debut in 1978, and his Metropolitan
  1 15 Opera debut in 1982, and received the bronze medal at
  1 16 the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Simon Estes has gone on to perform
  1 18 internationally on the operatic and concert stages in
  1 19 over 100 roles, and has performed opera, show tunes,
  1 20 spirituals, and contemporary music; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Simon Estes has not forgotten his Iowa
  1 22 roots, and has conducted master classes; visited,
  1 23 lectured, and performed with students and community
  1 24 choruses and bands; and displayed his talent in
  1 25 numerous concert performances in his home state of
  1 26 Iowa, and received, in 1996, the Iowa Award from Iowa
  1 27 Governor Terry Branstad; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, Simon Estes has been recognized as having
  1 29 a great talent and an extraordinary, imposing,
  1 30 voluminous, and elegant voice, and is considered one
  2  1 of the leading bass-baritones in the world; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, Simon Estes has demonstrated his
  2  3 compassion and humanity by establishing the Simon
  2  4 Estes Educational Foundation in Oklahoma, which has
  2  5 awarded over $1 million in merit-based scholarships;
  2  6 by establishing Children in Switzerland in 1993 to
  2  7 provide support for child health needs in Switzerland
  2  8 and Bulgaria; by establishing the Simon Estes School
  2  9 in South Africa; and by sponsoring, with Rotary
  2 10 District 6000, the attendance in Des Moines area high
  2 11 schools and performances by 40 musically gifted
  2 12 students from South Africa; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 13    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 14 That the House of Representatives honors Iowan Simon
  2 15 Estes for his achievements as a vocal artist,
  2 16 recognizing not only his amazing talent and career
  2 17 accomplishments but his compassionate humanitarian
  2 18 efforts as well.
