1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY RICHARDSON AND SCHRADER
1 3 A Resolution honoring the City of Indianola on its
1 4 sesquicentennial year.
1 5 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola was formed in 1849
1 6 for the purpose of establishing a county seat for
1 7 Warren County and the site was chosen for its central
1 8 location and proximity to stagecoach routes; and
1 9 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola was named by the
1 10 original survey team led by Colonel P.P. Henderson;
1 11 and
1 12 WHEREAS, the Indianola Learning Center, Emerson,
1 13 Irving, and Whittier elementary schools, Indianola
1 14 Middle School, and Indianola High School comprise one
1 15 of the best public education systems in Iowa; and
1 16 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola has been the home of
1 17 Simpson College since 1860, a private liberal arts
1 18 college of 1,900 students consistently ranked as one
1 19 of the best in the Midwest; and
1 20 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola provides many
1 21 recreational opportunities, including thirteen parks
1 22 and the McVay bike and walking trail; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola is the home of the
1 24 National Hot Air Balloon Classic and the National
1 25 Balloon Museum; and
1 26 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola has become one of
1 27 the finest cities in the State of Iowa and in America;
1 28 and
1 29 WHEREAS, the year 1999 marks the City of
1 30 Indianola's sesquicentennial anniversary year and the
2 1 opportunity for approximately 12,400 residents to
2 2 celebrate their rich cultural, educational,
2 3 industrial, and civic history; and
2 4 WHEREAS, the City of Indianola is looking forward
2 5 to the next 150 years; NOW THEREFORE,
2 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 7 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
2 8 extends its congratulations to the City of Indianola
2 9 on its sesquicentennial anniversary year and for its
2 10 150 years of service to its citizens and to the State
2 11 of Iowa; and
2 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 13 this Resolution be prepared and presented to the
2 14 Honorable Jerry Kelley, Mayor of the City of
2 15 Indianola.
