1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 135.29A STATE POISON CONTROL
1 2 CENTER.
1 3 The director of public health shall designate as the state
1 4 poison control center the medical center which is operating a
1 5 poison center in this state on or before July 1, 2000. The
1 6 state poison control center shall provide poison information;
1 7 telephone management advice and consultation; conduct hazard
1 8 surveillance to achieve hazard elimination; provide
1 9 professional and public education in poison prevention,
1 10 diagnosis, and treatment; and provide any other services or
1 11 functions necessary to be classified as a certified poison
1 12 control center. The poison control center shall not
1 13 subcontract with a poison control center outside of the state
1 14 to provide the necessary services or functions. The director
1 15 shall provide the necessary documentation of the state poison
1 16 control center designation to the poison control center
1 17 designee for certification by the American association of
1 18 poison control centers or other certifying organization.
1 19 Sec. 2. STATE POISON CENTER – APPROPRIATION. There is
1 20 appropriated from the tobacco settlement fund created in
1 21 section 12.65 to the Iowa department of public health for the
1 22 fiscal year beginning July 1, 2000, and ending June 30, 2001,
1 23 the following amount, or so much thereof as is necessary, for
1 24 use by the designated poison control center to provide a
1 25 poison control hotline, staffing, and other services and
1 26 functions necessary to meet the requirements of certification:

1 28 EXPLANATION
1 29 This bill requires the director of public health to
1 30 designate as the state poison control center a medical center
1 31 which is operating a poison control center in this state on or
1 32 before July 1, 2000. The bill specifies the services and
1 33 functions which the state poison control center is to provide,
1 34 prohibits the state poison control center from contracting
1 35 with a poison control center outside of the state to provide
2 1 the necessary services or functions, and requires the director
2 2 of public health to provide necessary documentation to the
2 3 state poison control center designee for certification by the
2 4 American association of poison control centers or other
2 5 certifying organization.
2 6 The bill also provides an appropriation from the tobacco
2 7 settlement fund to the Iowa department of public health for
2 8 use by the designated poison control center to provide a
2 9 poison control hotline, staffing, and other necessary services
2 10 and functions to meet the requirements of certification by the
2 11 American association of poison control centers.
