  1  1    Section 1.  Section 331.424, subsection 1, paragraph g,
  1  2 Code 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    g.  The maintenance and operation of the courts, including
  1  4 but not limited to the salary and expenses of the clerk of the
  1  5 district court and other employees of the clerk's office, and
  1  6 bailiffs, court costs if the prosecution fails or if the costs
  1  7 cannot be collected from the person liable, costs and expenses
  1  8 of prosecution under section 189A.17, salaries and expenses of
  1  9 juvenile court officers under chapter 602, court-ordered costs
  1 10 in domestic abuse cases under section 236.5, the county's
  1 11 expense for confinement of prisoners under chapter 356A,
  1 12 temporary assistance to the county attorney, county
  1 13 contributions to a retirement system for bailiffs,
  1 14 reimbursement for judicial magistrates under section 602.6501,
  1 15 claims filed under section 622.93, interpreters' fees under
  1 16 section 622B.7, uniform citation and complaint supplies under
  1 17 section 805.6, and costs of prosecution under section 815.13.
  1 18    Sec. 2.  Section 622B.7, Code 1999, is amended to read as
  1 19 follows:
  1 20    622B.7  FEE.
  1 21    An interpreter appointed under this chapter is entitled to
  1 22 a reasonable fee and expenses as determined by the rules
  1 23 applying to that proceeding.  This schedule shall be furnished
  1 24 to all courts and administrative agencies and maintained by
  1 25 them.  If the interpreter is appointed by the court, the fee
  1 26 and expenses shall be paid by the county state and if the
  1 27 interpreter is appointed by an administrative agency, the fee
  1 28 and expenses shall be paid out of funds available to the
  1 29 administrative agency.  
  1 30                           EXPLANATION
  1 31    This bill provides that an interpreter appointed by the
  1 32 court for a deaf or hard-of-hearing person shall have the
  1 33 interpreter's fee and expenses paid by the state and not the
  1 34 county.  The authority of the county to pay these expenses
  1 35 from a supplemental levy is also eliminated.
