1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 303.88A STATE POET LAUREATE
1 2 DESIGNATED – NOMINATING COMMITTEE.
1 3 1. A state poet laureate nominating committee is created.
1 4 The nominating committee shall consist of the heads of the
1 5 departments of English at the state universities under the
1 6 control of the state board of regents and at the private,
1 7 accredited four-year colleges and universities located in this
1 8 state, who shall be invited to serve without compensation for
1 9 their services.
1 10 2. At the request of the arts division administrator, the
1 11 members of the nominating committee, individually, shall each
1 12 submit to the governor at least one nominee who, based on the
1 13 nominee's poetic accomplishments, deserves the recognition as
1 14 state poet laureate. The governor shall select a state poet
1 15 laureate from the list of nominees for a term of office
1 16 determined by the governor. The state poet laureate is an
1 17 honorary office. The state poet laureate shall be a resident
1 18 of this state.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This bill provides for the nomination and selection of a
1 21 state poet laureate for the state. The English department
1 22 heads of the state universities and the private, accredited
1 23 four-year colleges and universities are invited to nominate
1 24 deserving poets, one of whom will be selected as state poet
1 25 laureate by the governor. The state poet laureate is an
1 26 honorary office for a term to be determined by the governor.
1 27 The state poet laureate shall be a resident of this state.
