1 1 Section 1. Section 321.34, subsection 19, Code 1999, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 19. UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES RETIRED SPECIAL PLATES. An
1 4 owner referred to in subsection 12 who is a retired member of
1 5 the United States armed forces, may, upon written application
1 6 to the department and upon presentation of satisfactory proof
1 7 of membership, order special registration plates with a United
1 8 States armed forces retired processed emblem. The emblem
1 9 shall be designed by the department in consultation with
1 10 service organizations. The application is subject to approval
1 11 by the department. For purposes of this subsection, a person
1 12 is considered to be retired if the person served twenty years
1 13 or longer in the United States armed forces, retired pursuant
1 14 to an early retirement program offered by the branch of the
1 15 United States armed forces in which the person served, or is a
1 16 person who served a minimum of ten years and received an
1 17 honorable discharge from service due to a medical
1 18 disqualification.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This bill provides that persons who retired pursuant to an
1 21 early retirement program offered by the branch of the United
1 22 States armed forces in which the person served are considered
1 23 to be "retired" for purposes of obtaining a United States
1 24 armed forces retired motor vehicle license plate. Currently,
1 25 only persons who have served 20 years or longer or persons who
1 26 have served 10 years or longer and received an honorable
1 27 discharge due to a medical disqualification are eligible to
1 28 receive the special plate.
