1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
1 2 BY SHOULTZ AND SCHRADER
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution urging citizen participation in
1 4 and cooperation with the conducting of the year 2000
1 5 census.
1 6 WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States
1 7 requires the conducting of a census every 10 years in
1 8 order to reapportion the membership of the United
1 9 States House of Representatives among the states; and
1 10 WHEREAS, the information obtained from the census
1 11 governs the distribution of over $180 billion in
1 12 federal funds annually and assists state and local
1 13 governments in planning and allocating funds for many
1 14 projects; and
1 15 WHEREAS, the twenty-second decennial census of this
1 16 country will be conducted April 1 of this year; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the legitimacy and usefulness of census
1 18 numbers depend on a complete and accurate count of
1 19 every resident of Iowa and the nation; and
1 20 WHEREAS, the confidentiality of census information
1 21 obtained is protected by federal law; NOW THEREFORE,
1 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
1 23 SENATE CONCURRING, That the general assembly
1 24 encourages all Iowans to fully participate in order to
1 25 be counted during the census this year; and
1 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the general assembly
1 27 salutes the efforts of the thousands of census takers
1 28 and support personnel hired to ensure that all Iowans
1 29 are counted; and
1 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That governmental,
2 1 business, and civic leaders of this state are urged to
2 2 publicize the importance of the census and to
2 3 encourage each resident of this state to provide
2 4 accurate and complete information during the
2 5 conducting of the census this year.
