  1  2                BY  HOLVECK and GRUNDBERG
  1  3           (COMPANION TO LSB 6738SS BY MADDOX)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution designating March 2000 as Iowa 
  1  5    Women's History Month.
  1  6    WHEREAS, Iowa women of every race, class, and
  1  7 ethnic background have made historic contributions to
  1  8 the growth and strength of our state and nation in
  1  9 countless recorded and unrecorded ways, including
  1 10 those contributions realized through the struggle for
  1 11 women's rights; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Iowa women have played and continue to
  1 13 play a critical economic, cultural, and social role by
  1 14 constituting a significant portion of the labor force,
  1 15 working inside and outside the home; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Iowa women were particularly important in
  1 17 the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic,
  1 18 and cultural institutions in our state and the nation;
  1 19 and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Iowa women and men worked to amend the
  1 21 Iowa Constitution to read "All men and women are, by
  1 22 nature, free and equal, and have certain inalienable
  1 23 rights ... "; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, Iowa women were leaders in the
  1 25 abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the
  1 26 industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement,
  1 27 the peace movement, and the women's suffrage movement,
  1 28 creating a more equitable and just society for all;
  1 29 and
  1 30    WHEREAS, despite these contributions and those of
  2  1 women throughout the world, the role of women
  2  2 continues to be overlooked and undervalued in
  2  3 literature, teaching, and the study of history; NOW
  2  4 THEREFORE,
  2  5    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  6 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly designate
  2  7 the month of March 2000 as Iowa Women's History Month,
  2  8 and invite the citizens of Iowa to continue to
  2  9 discover, reveal, and celebrate the roles women have
  2 10 played throughout history.
  2 11    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
  2 12 request that the Governor issue a proclamation calling
  2 13 upon the people of Iowa to observe Iowa Women's
  2 14 History Month with appropriate programs, ceremonies,
  2 15 and activities.
