  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                       BY  THOMSON
  1  3 A House Concurrent Resolution encouraging state and
  1  4    local governments, business interests, health care
  1  5    professionals, and individuals with interest in
  1  6    good health to help in educating the public to raise
  1  7    awareness regarding osteoporosis prevention,
  1  8    detection, and treatment.
  1  9    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a condition of reduced
  1 10 bone mass that primarily affects women, resulting in
  1 11 crippling bone fractures; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a progressive disease that
  1 13 generally is revealed with bone fractures occurring in
  1 14 the hip, spine, and wrist; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the prevalence of osteoporosis in Iowa
  1 16 continues to grow, and by 2015, the Iowa department of
  1 17 public health estimates the annual cost to Iowans for
  1 18 treatment, and long-term care, and other needs could
  1 19 reach $229 million; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed
  1 21 with proper nutrition, especially consumption of
  1 22 calcium, regular exercise beginning in childhood, and
  1 23 education; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, low-bone density and osteoporosis can be
  1 25 detected through bone density testing and treated with
  1 26 certain medications; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, educational efforts to raise awareness
  1 28 regarding osteoporosis should be targeted both to
  1 29 youth, who are increasingly substituting consumption
  1 30 of soft drinks in place of milk, and to adults; NOW
  2  1 THEREFORE,
  2  2    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  3 SENATE CONCURRING, That Iowa health care
  2  4 professionals, county public health departments,
  2  5 public and private schools, hospitals, area agencies
  2  6 on aging, employer-operated wellness programs, health
  2  7 care insurers and care management corporations,
  2  8 women's groups, nonprofit organizations, professional
  2  9 associations, religious organizations and other
  2 10 community-based organizations, and others who can
  2 11 provide educational information to youth and adults,
  2 12 are encouraged to provide general educational
  2 13 information concerning osteoporosis, as well as the
  2 14 methods for preventing osteoporosis, importance of
  2 15 bone-density testing and other means of detecting low-
  2 16 bone density osteoporosis, and approaches for treating
  2 17 osteoporosis; and
  2 18    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage of this
  2 19 Resolution, an official copy shall be sent by the
  2 20 Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the
  2 21 Iowa department of public health for the department to
  2 22 disseminate as part of its efforts to educate the
  2 23 public concerning osteoporosis.
