1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. __
1 2 BY SHOULTZ, DOTZLER, JENKINS, and WITT
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution urging the Governor to
1 4 appoint a commission to develop design proposals
1 5 for Iowa's participation in the United States Mint's
1 6 50 state quarters program.
1 7 WHEREAS, the United States Mint has implemented a
1 8 program in accordance with Public Law No. 105-124, to
1 9 commemorate each of the 50 states in the order in
1 10 which the states ratified the United States
1 11 Constitution and joined the Union; and
1 12 WHEREAS, for the 10-year period 1999 through 2008,
1 13 the United States will annually issue five quarter
1 14 dollar coins with state designs displayed on the
1 15 reverse side of the coins; and
1 16 WHEREAS, each state has an opportunity to develop
1 17 and submit designs representative of the state; and
1 18 WHEREAS, quarter dollar coins have a commercial
1 19 lifespan of at least 30 years and are collected for
1 20 generations, providing an opportunity for wide
1 21 distribution of an enduring symbol of this state; and
1 22 WHEREAS, during World War II the five Sullivan
1 23 brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, and their surviving family
1 24 members became an enduring national symbol of the
1 25 importance of families in Iowa, following the
1 26 brothers' death upon the sinking of the U.S.S. Juneau
1 27 and the subsequent involvement of their parents and
1 28 sister in the war effort; and
1 29 WHEREAS, Iowa entered the Union as the twenty-ninth
1 30 state on December 28, 1846, and the quarter dollar
2 1 honoring the state of Iowa will be issued in 2004; and
2 2 WHEREAS, the Governor will be contacted no later
2 3 than 2002 concerning Iowa's design submission; NOW
2 4 THEREFORE,
2 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
2 6 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Governor is urged to
2 7 appoint a special commission charged with developing
2 8 designs to submit to the United States Mint for the
2 9 Iowa quarter dollar; and
2 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the commission be
2 11 directed to develop designs relating to the renowned
2 12 Sullivan brothers as a symbol for this state.
