  The Senate met in regular session at 10:15 a.m., President Kramer
  presiding.

  Prayer was offered by the Reverend Louis Jaeger of St. Patrick's
  Church, Epworth, Iowa.

  The Journal of Wednesday, April 15, 1998, was approved.

  LEAVES OF ABSENCE

  Leaves of absence were granted as follows:

  Senators Fink and McCoy until they arrive, on request of Senator Dearden.

  AMENDMENT WITHDRAWN

  Senator Gronstal asked and received unanimous consent to
  withdraw amendment S-5716 filed by Senators Rife and Gronstal
  on April 15, 1998, to Senate File 2320.

  PRESENTATION OF VISITORS

  The Chair welcomed students from Cherokee Middle School,
  Cherokee, Iowa, accompanied by Pat Phipps.  Senator Freeman.

  LEAVE OF ABSENCE

  Leave of absence was granted as follows:

  Senator McLaren until he arrives, on request of Senator Iverson.
