PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY KRAMER 1 3 A Senate Resolution commemorating the founding and 1 4 accomplishments of the federal Civilian Conservation 1 5 Corps. 1 6 WHEREAS, on March 31, l933, the United States 1 7 Congress approved, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt 1 8 signed, legislation establishing the greatest 1 9 environmental program in the history of the nation, 1 10 the Civilian Conservation Corps; and 1 11 WHEREAS, the enrollees, who were 17 to 23 years of 1 12 age, planted tens of millions of tree seedlings on 1 13 land in federal and state parks; and 1 14 WHEREAS, the United States Government has 1 15 collected, and continues to collect, millions of 1 16 dollars in harvesting fees from lumber companies as a 1 17 result of the trees planted by the Civilian 1 18 Conservation Corps; and 1 19 WHEREAS, thousands of farmers received assistance 1 20 from the Civilian Conservation Corps in terracing and 1 21 establishing contour farming practices, preventing 1 22 tons of soil erosion and substantially increasing crop 1 23 production; and 1 24 WHEREAS, many lodges, cabins, shelters, and trails 1 25 built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in state and 1 26 national parks have provided countless hours of 1 27 recreation and enjoyment to visitors; and 1 28 WHEREAS, the civilian conservation corps concept 1 29 could be a valuable complement to AmeriCorps and Job 1 30 Corps by performing needed work in the state and 2 1 national forests and parks; and 2 2 WHEREAS, as in the 1930s, a new civilian 2 3 conservation corps would provide job training and 2 4 instill in the enrollees a work ethic and self- 2 5 discipline, and provide workfare assistance to needy 2 6 families; NOW THEREFORE, 2 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Tuesday, March 2 8 31, l998, be declared National Civilian Conservation 2 9 Corps Recognition Day in honor of the former members 2 10 of the federal Civilian Conservation Corps and to 2 11 encourage the discussion of benefits of establishing a 2 12 new civilian conservation corps for the youth of 2 13 today. 2 14 LSB 4192SS 77 2 15 tj/jw/5
