1 2 BY KRAMER
1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring Bob Brooks, Jim Zabel, and
1 4 Ron Gonder for their dedication and enthusiasm in
1 5 broadcasting University of Iowa Hawkeye sports.
1 6 WHEREAS, Bob Brooks of KHAK radio in Cedar Rapids
1 7 has been broadcasting University of Iowa Hawkeye
1 8 sporting events for 54 years; and
1 9 WHEREAS, Jim Zabel of WHO radio in Des Moines has
1 10 been broadcasting University of Iowa Hawkeye sporting
1 11 events for 50 years; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Ron Gonder of WMT radio in Cedar Rapids
1 13 has been broadcasting University of Iowa Hawkeye
1 14 sporting events for 28 years; and
1 15 WHEREAS, this trio of broadcasters has provided
1 16 Iowans with a varied and entertaining choice of play-
1 17 by-play announcing styles in bringing Iowa Hawkeye
1 18 sports to the citizens of this state and across the
1 19 country; and
1 20 WHEREAS, Iowans will miss the differing styles of
1 21 enthusiasm and professionalism represented by these
1 22 three broadcasters; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa has signed an
1 24 exclusive contract for Hawkeye football and basketball
1 25 radio broadcasts beginning with the 1997 football
1 26 season, ending the play-by-play broadcasts of these
1 27 three broadcasters; and
1 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Brooks, Mr. Zabel, and Mr. Gonder will
1 29 all continue to participate in new roles other than
1 30 play-by-play announcing during future Iowa Hawkeye
2 1 football and basketball broadcasts; and
2 2 WHEREAS, the Cedar Rapids Gazette online service
2 3 has aptly noted that "long after the microphone is
2 4 turned off, we will still hear echoes of 'How ya
2 5 doin', everybody' (Brooks), 'I love it! I love it! I
2 6 love it!' (Zabel), and 'Oh, bro-th-er!' (Gonder)"; NOW
2 7 THEREFORE,
2 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That tribute be paid
2 9 to Bob Brooks, Jim Zabel, and Ron Gonder and that they
2 10 be recognized and thanked by the people of Iowa for
2 11 their years of dedicated and professional service in
2 12 bringing University of Iowa Hawkeye football and
2 13 basketball to the people of Iowa.
2 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
2 15 Senate send copies of this Resolution to Bob Brooks,
2 16 Jim Zabel, and Ron Gonder.
