PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 321.437, unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 1 2 1997, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror so 1 4 located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for 1 5 a distance of at least two hundred feet to the rear of such 1 6 vehicle. Any motor vehicle so loaded, or towing another 1 7 vehicle in such manner, as to obstruct the view in a rear view 1 8 mirror located in the driver's compartment shall be equipped 1 9 with a side mirror so located that the view to the rear will 1 10 not be obstructedhowever. However, when such vehicle is not 1 11 loaded or towing another vehicle the side mirrors shall be 1 12 retracted or removed. All van or van type motor vehicles 1 13 shall be equipped with outside mirrors of unit magnification, 1 14 each with not less than nineteen point five square inches of 1 15 reflective surface, installed with stable supports on both 1 16 sides of the vehicle, located so as to provide the driver a 1 17 view to the rear along both sides of the vehicle, and 1 18 adjustable in both the horizontal and vertical directions to 1 19 view the rearward scene. All motor trucks and truck tractors 1 20 shall be equipped with outside mirrors, which include a convex 1 21 mirrored surface of not less than eight inches in diameter, 1 22 installed with stable supports on both sides of the vehicle, 1 23 located so as to provide the driver a view to the rear along 1 24 both sides of the vehicle, and adjustable in both the 1 25 horizontal and vertical directions to view the rearward scene. 1 26 EXPLANATION 1 27 This bill requires motor trucks and truck tractors to be 1 28 equipped with outside mirrors on both sides of the vehicle. 1 29 The mirrors are required to be adjustable horizontally and 1 30 vertically and to include a convex mirrored surface of not 1 31 less than eight inches in diameter. Motor trucks are defined 1 32 as those motor vehicles designed primarily for carrying 1 33 livestock, merchandise, freight of any kind, or over nine 1 34 passengers. Truck tractors are defined as those motor 1 35 vehicles designed and used primarily for drawing other 2 1 vehicles where the weight of the drawn vehicle and any load is 2 2 distributed between the truck tractor and the drawn vehicle. 2 3 Violation of this equipment requirement is a scheduled 2 4 violation carrying a $10 penalty under Code section 805.8, 2 5 subsection 2, paragraph "c". 2 6 LSB 3068SS 77 2 7 jm/sc/14.1
