1 1 Section 1. Section 321.40, Code 1997, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new unnumbered paragraph:
1 3 NEW UNNUMBERED PARAGRAPH. The county treasurer shall
1 4 refuse to renew the registration of a vehicle registered to an
1 5 applicant until the applicant provides proof in accordance
1 6 with rules adopted under section 307.12 that the applicant has
1 7 in force an insurance policy covering liability for bodily
1 8 injury, death, and property damage arising out of the
1 9 operation by the applicant of a vehicle in at least the
1 10 amounts required under section 321A.1, subsection 10.
1 11 EXPLANATION
1 12 This bill provides that the county treasurer shall refuse
1 13 to renew the registration of a vehicle unless the owner
1 14 provides proof of insurance in at least the following amounts:
1 15 1. Twenty thousand dollars because of the bodily injury or
1 16 death of one person in any one accident.
1 17 2. Subject to subsection 1, $40,000 because of bodily
1 18 injury to or death of two or more persons, in any one
1 19 accident.
1 20 3. Fifteen thousand dollars because of injury to or
1 21 destruction of property of others in any one accident.
