  1  1    Section 1.  Section 48A.11, subsection 1, paragraph i, Code
  1  2 1997, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    i.  Political party registration affiliation, including
  1  4 sufficient space to write in the name of a political party or
  1  5 to indicate no affiliation with a political party.  There
  1  6 shall be printed on the form the following statement:
  1  7 "Failure to designate a political party affiliation makes the
  1  8 registrant ineligible to participate in a primary election".  
  1  9                           EXPLANATION
  1 10    This bill requires that a voter registration form provide
  1 11 sufficient space for a registrant to write in the name of a
  1 12 political party when declaring a party affiliation or to
  1 13 indicate no party affiliation.  The bill also provides that
  1 14 the form contain a statement indicating that failure to
  1 15 designate a party affiliation makes the registrant ineligible
  1 16 for primary election participation.
