PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY DVORSKY, NEUHAUSER, HORN, McKEAN, TINSMAN, 1 3 McKIBBEN, HEDGE, and KRAMER 1 4 (COMPANION TO LSB 2425HH BY MASCHER) 1 5 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing the 150th anniver- 1 6 sary of the founding of the University of Iowa. 1 7 WHEREAS, Article XI, section 8, of the Constitution 1 8 of the State of Iowa permanently establishes the State 1 9 University, at Iowa City, in the County of Johnson; 1 10 and 1 11 WHEREAS, the Old Capitol located at the University 1 12 of Iowa housed the fifth legislative Assembly of the 1 13 Territory of Iowa in 1842 and then became the first 1 14 capitol of the State of Iowa in 1846; and 1 15 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa was founded on 1 16 February 25, 1847, only 59 days after Iowa became a 1 17 state; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa has awarded over 1 19 250,000 degrees since the university awarded the first 1 20 degree to Dexter Smith in 1858; and 1 21 WHEREAS, in 1855, the University of Iowa offered 1 22 admission to men and women on an equal basis; and 1 23 WHEREAS, in 1868, the University of Iowa School of 1 24 Law was the first law school in the United States 1 25 located west of the Mississippi River; and 1 26 WHEREAS, in 1872, the University of Iowa created 1 27 the first permanent college-level department of 1 28 education in the United States; and 1 29 WHEREAS, in 1873, a University of Iowa student, 1 30 Mary Hickey Wilkinson, received a law degree from the 2 1 University of Iowa School of Law, becoming the first 2 2 woman in the United States to earn a law degree; and 2 3 WHEREAS, in 1879, a University of Iowa student, 2 4 Alexander Clark, Jr., received a law degree from the 2 5 University of Iowa School of Law, becoming one of the 2 6 first African-Americans in the United States to earn a 2 7 law degree; and 2 8 WHEREAS, in 1882, the University of Iowa Dental 2 9 Department was the first dental department in the 2 10 United States located west of the Mississippi River; 2 11 and 2 12 WHEREAS, in 1901, students at the University of 2 13 Iowa began publishing the first daily campus newspaper 2 14 west of the Mississippi River; and 2 15 WHEREAS, since 1905, 17 students from the 2 16 University of Iowa have been named Rhodes Scholars; 2 17 and 2 18 WHEREAS, in 1919, the University of Iowa 2 19 established a separate department of neurology, which 2 20 is the oldest continuing program west of the 2 21 Mississippi River; and 2 22 WHEREAS, in 1927, the University of Iowa became the 2 23 first state university to establish a School of 2 24 Religion; and 2 25 WHEREAS, in 1934, artist Grant Wood joined the 2 26 faculty of the Department of Graphic and Plastic Arts, 2 27 four years after painting "American Gothic"; and 2 28 WHEREAS, in 1936, the Writers' Workshop was 2 29 established as the first university-sponsored program 2 30 in creative writing in the United States, and boasts 3 1 such graduates as Flannery O'Connor, Gail Godwin, John 3 2 Irving, and Mona Van Duyn; and 3 3 WHEREAS, in 1938, the University of Iowa 3 4 established the first hospital pharmacy graduate 3 5 program in the United States; and 3 6 WHEREAS, in 1939, a University of Iowa student, 3 7 Nile C. Kinnick, was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 3 8 recognition of his achievements as a football player 3 9 for the University of Iowa football team; and 3 10 WHEREAS, since 1939, University of Iowa graduates 3 11 have earned 13 Pulitzer Prizes; and 3 12 WHEREAS, in 1948, the University of Iowa School of 3 13 Journalism awarded the first degree in mass 3 14 communication in the United States; and 3 15 WHEREAS, in 1955, the University of Iowa 3 16 established the first institute of agricultural 3 17 medicine and environmental health in the western 3 18 hemisphere; and 3 19 WHEREAS, in 1958, University of Iowa physics 3 20 professor James A. Van Allen discovered belts of 3 21 radiation surrounding the earth, a phenomenon that 3 22 eventually would be named the Van Allen Belts; and 3 23 WHEREAS, generations of students educated at the 3 24 University of Iowa have made tremendous contributions 3 25 to the betterment of the state, the country, and the 3 26 world; and 3 27 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa has distinguished 3 28 itself nationally and internationally in many academic 3 29 fields and endeavors; and 3 30 WHEREAS, facing a new century, the University of 4 1 Iowa has made a renewed commitment to its core values 4 2 of learning, community, responsibility, integrity, and 4 3 quality; and 4 4 WHEREAS, the people of Iowa are invited to 4 5 celebrate the University of Iowa's Sesquicentennial 4 6 Year, marking 150 years of teaching, research, and 4 7 service to the State of Iowa and to the nation; NOW 4 8 THEREFORE, 4 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF 4 10 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General 4 11 Assembly recognizes and congratulates the University 4 12 of Iowa for 150 continuous years of providing 4 13 exemplary education for its students and providing 4 14 positive contributions to the quality of life of all 4 15 Iowans, and encourages the University of Iowa to 4 16 continue to fulfill the threefold mission of teaching, 4 17 research, and service. 4 18 LSB 2425SS 77 4 19 tm/jj/8.1
