1 1 Section 1. Section 135C.34, Code 1997, is amended to read
1 2 as follows:
1 3 135C.34 MEDICATION AIDE – CERTIFICATION.
1 4 1. The department of inspections and appeals, in
1 5 cooperation with other appropriate agencies, shall establish a
1 6 procedure to allow a person who is certified as a medication
1 7 aide in another state to become certified in this state upon
1 8 completion and passage of both the certified nurse aide and
1 9 certified medication aide challenge examinations, without
1 10 additional requirements for certification, including but not
1 11 limited to, required employment in this state prior to
1 12 certification. The department shall adopt rules pursuant to
1 13 chapter 17A to administer this section.
1 14 2. The department shall establish minimum training
1 15 standards and continuing education requirements for certified
1 16 nurse aides and certified medication aides by rule. At a
1 17 minimum, certified nurse aides and certified medication aides
1 18 shall be required to complete twelve hours of community
1 19 college-level continuing education annually.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill provides for continuing education requirements
1 22 for certified nurse aides and certified medication aides. The
1 23 bill provides that the department of inspections and appeals
1 24 shall establish minimum training standards and continuing
1 25 education requirements for certified nurse aides and certified
1 26 medication aides by rule. At a minimum, certified nurse aides
1 27 and certified medication aides shall be required to complete
1 28 12 hours of community college-level continuing education
1 29 annually.
