1 1 Section 1. There is appropriated from the general fund of
1 2 the state to the department of economic development for the
1 3 fiscal year beginning July 1, 1997, and ending June 30, 1998,
1 4 the following amount, or so much thereof as is necessary, to
1 5 be used for the purpose designated:
1 6 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIVISION
1 7 1. Rural development program
1 8 For providing grants to political subdivisions providing
1 9 emergency services through the use of first responders, as
1 10 defined in section 147A.1:
1 11 .................................................. $ 1,000,000
1 12 2. Grants shall only be awarded under this section for
1 13 necessary equipment of first responders and where the cost of
1 14 a single piece of equipment for which a grant is applied for
1 15 is $15,000 or greater. As a condition of receiving a grant
1 16 from the funds appropriated in this section, the political
1 17 subdivision shall provide matching funds totaling at least 25
1 18 percent of the total cost of the equipment.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This bill appropriates $1,000,000 to the department of
1 21 economic development to be used for providing grants to
1 22 political subdivisions for the purchase of high cost emergency
1 23 equipment used by first responders. The bill provides that a
1 24 piece of equipment for which a grant is sought must cost a
1 25 minimum of $15,000, and the political subdivision must provide
1 26 a 25 percent match.
