1 1 Section 1. Section 321.234, Code 1997, is amended by
1 2 adding the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 2A. When operated on a street or highway
1 4 having a speed limit of twenty-five miles per hour or greater,
1 5 a bicycle shall be equipped with a bicycle safety flag which
1 6 extends not less than five feet above the ground and is
1 7 attached to the bicycle behind the rider. The flag shall be
1 8 triangular in shape with an area of not less than thirty
1 9 square inches and be blaze orange in color.
1 10 EXPLANATION
1 11 This bill requires bicycles operated on streets or highways
1 12 having speed limits of 25 miles per hour or greater to be
1 13 equipped with a blaze orange, triangular flag of at least 30
1 14 square inches in area. The bill requires the flag to extend
1 15 at least five feet above the ground and be mounted on the
1 16 bicycle to the rear of the rider. A violation of this
1 17 provision is a simple misdemeanor.
