1 1 Section 1. Section 257.6, subsection 5, Code 1997, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 5. WEIGHTED ENROLLMENT. Weighted enrollment is the budget
1 4 enrollment plus the district's additional enrollment because
1 5 of special education calculated on December 1 of the base year
1 6 plus additional pupils added due to the application of the
1 7 supplementary weighting plus the district's additional
1 8 enrollment for transportation costs based upon the sparsity
1 9 factor calculated under subsection 6.
1 10 Weighted enrollment for special education support services
1 11 costs is equal to the weighted enrollment minus the additional
1 12 pupils added due to the application of the supplementary
1 13 weighting.
1 14 Sec. 2. Section 257.6, Code 1997, is amended by adding the
1 15 following new subsection:
1 16 NEW SUBSECTION. 6. SPARSITY FACTOR. For budget years
1 17 beginning on or after July 1, 1998, a school district having
1 18 fewer than three and five-tenths resident public school pupils
1 19 per square mile on December 1 of the base year shall receive
1 20 additional enrollment for transportation costs because of the
1 21 sparsity factor. This additional enrollment is equal to one-
1 22 tenth of the school district's actual enrollment for the base
1 23 year.
1 24 EXPLANATION
1 25 This bill provides additional weighted enrollment for
1 26 transportation costs based upon a sparsity factor of 3.5
1 27 resident public school pupils per square mile of the school
1 28 district beginning July 1, 1998.
