  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2 BY  GARMAN, BELL, LARKIN, CORMACK, WELTER, RICHARDSON,
  1  3              VANDE HOEF, MYERS, and HEATON
  1  4          (COMPANION TO LSB 4193SS BY DEARDEN)
  1  5 A Concurrent Resolution to honor the memory of Jim 
  1  6    Hancock.
  1  7    WHEREAS, Jim Hancock died on January 22, 1998, at
  1  8 the age of 55.
  1  9    WHEREAS, Jim Hancock dedicated his life to serving
  1 10 Iowans by serving in community corrections for 27
  1 11 years, and as director of the Fifth Judicial District
  1 12 Department of Correctional Services for the last 20
  1 13 years; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, as director of the Fifth Judicial District
  1 15 Department of Correctional Services, Jim Hancock
  1 16 oversaw nearly 6,000 criminal offenders who
  1 17 participated in programs such as probation, parole,
  1 18 and pretrial release, as well as supervising three
  1 19 community corrections residential facilities; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Jim Hancock was instrumental in the
  1 21 development of several innovative programs to serve
  1 22 the needs of the correctional system, such as the
  1 23 development of programs for young criminals and the
  1 24 establishment of Polk County's drug court program
  1 25 which involves a team approach to working with drug
  1 26 addicts; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, Jim Hancock's dedicated service to
  1 28 community corrections has been long recognized by his
  1 29 colleagues, resulting in his being named the
  1 30 correctional worker of the year by the Iowa
  2  1 Correctional Association in 1983; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, Jim Hancock's legacy as a caring husband
  2  3 and father, as well as dedicated public servant, will
  2  4 continue to live on with every person who was touched
  2  5 and affected by his life; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  6    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  7 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly pay
  2  8 tribute and honor the memory of Jim Hancock as a
  2  9 champion for his family, his colleagues, and for
  2 10 community corrections in Iowa; and
  2 11    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
  2 12 resolution be sent to the family of Jim Hancock and to
  2 13 the Fifth Judicial District Department of Correctional
  2 14 Services.
