PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY MASCHER, BLODGETT, BRADLEY, CHAPMAN, COHOON, 1 3 DODERER, DRAKE, FOEGE, FORD, GRUNDBERG, HANSEN, 1 4 HOLVECK, JENKINS, KREIMAN, LARSON, MARTIN, MILLAGE, 1 5 MORELAND, MYERS, NELSON, RICHARDSON, WEIGEL, and WISE 1 6 (COMPANION TO LSB 2425SS BY DVORSKY) 1 7 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing the 150th anniver- 1 8 sary of the founding of the University of Iowa. 1 9 WHEREAS, Article XI, section 8, of the Constitution 1 10 of the State of Iowa permanently establishes the State 1 11 University, at Iowa City, in the County of Johnson; 1 12 and 1 13 WHEREAS, the Old Capitol located at the University 1 14 of Iowa housed the fifth legislative Assembly of the 1 15 Territory of Iowa in 1842 and then became the first 1 16 capitol of the State of Iowa in 1846; and 1 17 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa was founded on 1 18 February 25, 1847, only 59 days after Iowa became a 1 19 state; and 1 20 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa has awarded over 1 21 250,000 degrees since the university awarded the first 1 22 degree to Dexter Smith in 1858; and 1 23 WHEREAS, in 1855, the University of Iowa offered 1 24 admission to men and women on an equal basis; and 1 25 WHEREAS, in 1868, the University of Iowa School of 1 26 Law was the first law school in the United States 1 27 located west of the Mississippi River; and 1 28 WHEREAS, in 1872, the University of Iowa created 1 29 the first permanent college-level department of 1 30 education in the United States; and 2 1 WHEREAS, in 1873, a University of Iowa student, 2 2 Mary Hickey Wilkinson, received a law degree from the 2 3 University of Iowa School of Law, becoming the first 2 4 woman in the United States to earn a law degree; and 2 5 WHEREAS, in 1879, a University of Iowa student, 2 6 Alexander Clark, Jr., received a law degree from the 2 7 University of Iowa School of Law, becoming one of the 2 8 first African-Americans in the United States to earn a 2 9 law degree; and 2 10 WHEREAS, in 1882, the University of Iowa Dental 2 11 Department was the first dental department in the 2 12 United States located west of the Mississippi River; 2 13 and 2 14 WHEREAS, in 1901, students at the University of 2 15 Iowa began publishing the first daily campus newspaper 2 16 west of the Mississippi River; and 2 17 WHEREAS, since 1905, 17 students from the 2 18 University of Iowa have been named Rhodes Scholars; 2 19 and 2 20 WHEREAS, in 1919, the University of Iowa 2 21 established a separate department of neurology, which 2 22 is the oldest continuing program west of the 2 23 Mississippi River; and 2 24 WHEREAS, in 1927, the University of Iowa became the 2 25 first state university to establish a School of 2 26 Religion; and 2 27 WHEREAS, in 1934, artist Grant Wood joined the 2 28 faculty of the Department of Graphic and Plastic Arts, 2 29 four years after painting "American Gothic"; and 2 30 WHEREAS, in 1936, the Writers' Workshop was 3 1 established as the first university-sponsored program 3 2 in creative writing in the United States, and boasts 3 3 such graduates as Flannery O'Connor, Gail Godwin, John 3 4 Irving, and Mona Van Duyn; and 3 5 WHEREAS, in 1938, the University of Iowa 3 6 established the first hospital pharmacy graduate 3 7 program in the United States; and 3 8 WHEREAS, in 1939, a University of Iowa student, 3 9 Nile C. Kinnick, was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 3 10 recognition of his achievements as a football player 3 11 for the University of Iowa football team; and 3 12 WHEREAS, since 1939, University of Iowa graduates 3 13 have earned 13 Pulitzer Prizes; and 3 14 WHEREAS, in 1948, the University of Iowa School of 3 15 Journalism awarded the first degree in mass 3 16 communication in the United States; and 3 17 WHEREAS, in 1955, the University of Iowa 3 18 established the first institute of agricultural 3 19 medicine and environmental health in the western 3 20 hemisphere; and 3 21 WHEREAS, in 1958, University of Iowa physics 3 22 professor James A. Van Allen discovered belts of 3 23 radiation surrounding the earth, a phenomenon that 3 24 eventually would be named the Van Allen Belts; and 3 25 WHEREAS, generations of students educated at the 3 26 University of Iowa have made tremendous contributions 3 27 to the betterment of the state, the country, and the 3 28 world; and 3 29 WHEREAS, the University of Iowa has distinguished 3 30 itself nationally and internationally in many academic 4 1 fields and endeavors; and 4 2 WHEREAS, facing a new century, the University of 4 3 Iowa has made a renewed commitment to its core values 4 4 of learning, community, responsibility, integrity, and 4 5 quality; and 4 6 WHEREAS, the people of Iowa are invited to 4 7 celebrate the University of Iowa's Sesquicentennial 4 8 Year, marking 150 years of teaching, research, and 4 9 service to the State of Iowa and to the nation; NOW 4 10 THEREFORE, 4 11 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 4 12 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly 4 13 recognizes and congratulates the University of Iowa 4 14 for 150 continuous years of providing exemplary 4 15 education for its students and providing positive 4 16 contributions to the quality of life of all Iowans, 4 17 and encourages the University of Iowa to continue to 4 18 fulfill the threefold mission of teaching, research, 4 19 and service. 4 20 LSB 2425HH 77 4 21 tm/jj/8.2
