1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. __
1 2 BY MEYER
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution supporting and encouraging the
1 4 diligent efforts by the United States Department of
1 5 Agriculture in cooperation with Iowa State University
1 6 and the Iowa Pork Producers Association to establish
1 7 a research farm site as part of the National Swine
1 8 Research Center.
1 9 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa is one of the major
1 10 agricultural production regions of the world; and
1 11 WHEREAS, for more than a century, Iowa has been the
1 12 national leader in swine production, contributing
1 13 approximately twenty-five percent of the nation's pork
1 14 production; and
1 15 WHEREAS, pork production represents the largest
1 16 single commodity industry in the state by accounting
1 17 for $3.3 billion in net economic activity and 5.2
1 18 percent of gross state production; and
1 19 WHEREAS, Iowa's preeminent position as the supplier
1 20 of swine and pork products means that the state is an
1 21 ideal place to conduct research which benefits swine
1 22 producers and the pork industry; and
1 23 WHEREAS, a number of critical issues face swine
1 24 producers and the pork industry in this state and in
1 25 the nation, including the need to maximize economic
1 26 opportunities, animal production efficiency, animal
1 27 health, and protection of the environment; and
1 28 WHEREAS, the United States Department of
1 29 Agriculture and Iowa State University in cooperation
1 30 with the Iowa Pork Producers Association have taken
2 1 major strides to confront these critical issues by a
2 2 commitment to significantly invest in scientific
2 3 research; and
2 4 WHEREAS, evidence of this commitment to excellence
2 5 in scientific research is the construction of the
2 6 National Swine Research Center which shall in the
2 7 future provide solutions to the issues confronting the
2 8 producers and industry; and
2 9 WHEREAS, the first component of the project
2 10 establishing the National Swine Research Center is the
2 11 construction of a major research laboratory which is
2 12 nearing completion on the Iowa State University
2 13 campus; and
2 14 WHEREAS, there remains a critical need to establish
2 15 the second component of the National Swine Research
2 16 Center which is a related research farm site; NOW
2 17 THEREFORE,
2 18 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
2 19 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
2 20 recognizes the efforts of the United States Department
2 21 of Agriculture, Iowa State University, and the Iowa
2 22 Pork Producers in establishing the National Swine
2 23 Research Center in order to provide essential research
2 24 benefiting swine producers and the pork industry into
2 25 the twenty-first century; and
2 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the United States
2 27 Department of Agriculture in cooperation with Iowa
2 28 State University and the Iowa Pork Producers
2 29 Association is urged to continue to progress with all
2 30 appropriate diligence in establishing a farm site that
3 1 will enable relevant research to proceed without
3 2 delay; and
3 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
3 4 resolution be sent by the Chief Clerk of the House of
3 5 Representatives to the Secretary of Agriculture,
3 6 United States Department of Agriculture; the
3 7 Administrator of the Agricultural Research Service of
3 8 the United States Department of Agriculture; the
3 9 President of Iowa State University; and the President
3 10 of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
