1 1 Amend Senate File 58, as amended, passed, and
1 2 reprinted by the Senate, as follows:
1 3 #1. Page 1, by striking lines 13 through 15 and
1 4 inserting the following: "children throughout the
1 5 state.
1 6 In designating the English language as the common
1 7 language of the state, it is not the intent of the
1 8 general assembly to discriminate in any way against
1 9 recent immigrants from other countries who have not
1 10 yet achieved a working command of the English
1 11 language. Instead, the intent of the general assembly
1 12 is to assist such individuals in achieving an
1 13 autonomous existence as a citizen of the state of Iowa
1 14 by encouraging the rapid and successful transition
1 15 toward the ability to functionally utilize the English
1 16 language.
1 17 The requirements of this section establishing
1 18 English as the common language of the state shall not
1 19 apply to any of the following:"
